The Myanmar Department of Information Technology and Cyber Security has announced that an open tender has been issued for private firms to build a satellite link system. U Sai Saw Lin Tun, Deputy Director General of the Department said that a survey was conducted in July this year to find out the potential domestic needs and usage along with the particular type of system to be built. He further elaborated that while Myanmar cannot afford to build its own satellite yet, a suitable satellite can be rented.
The Ministry of Communication and Information Technology has long-term plans to build and operate an own satellite in the near future but will use the newly built link system with a convenient international satellite for the time being. The main areas using satellite links are mobile telephone and Internet connections for remote areas, television broadcasting, and other businesses, such as banking.
The tenders will need to be submitted no later than September 1st, 2015.
