The Mandalay Division Mango Producers Association has held discussions with the US Economics Consul delegation to allow the export of Myanmar mangoes to the US. Daw Than Than Swe, Chair of the said association has been cited as saying" We want to export to the US market, which is the biggest market globally. Even if the numbers are quite small, we are sure of getting high prices. Should they allow it, we are ready on our side and they( the representatives) has promised to report the matter to the responsible Departments( in the US)."
On August 13th, a delegation led by the US Economics Consul for Asia arrived in Mandalay and discussions were held with the Mandalay FCCI members. The potential export of Myanmar mangoes was one of the point’s discussed.
The US is the world's largest mango importer and Myanmar ranks number 6 on Asia's top mango exporters(including illegal trade as well). Currently, the majority of Myanmar mangoes are exported to China and Singapore and border trade with China accounts for 90% of the trade.
In Myanmar, Mandalay and Sagaing Divisions as well as the Shan State are the leading mango growing regions with Mandalay and Kyaukse provinces being the major locales, according to the Ministry of Trade and Commerce.
The number of mango exports has been rising steadily since 2010 and SeinTaLone, Hinthar and YinGwe and the major varieties exported. During the fiscal year 2013-14, more than 45,000 tons of mangos were exported and earnings amount to more than USD 24 million. (Quoted by the Ministry of Trade and Commerce)
